My very dear friend Shannon recently sent me these interesting drawings from Ralph Steadman, the artist behind the infamous illustrations in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
This is his artwork for Alice in Wonderland. The collaboration makes sense, but for some reason it still surprised me. I guess it surprises me when anyone illustrates Alice in Wonderland, because John Tenniel’s work is so iconic that when someone creates something that will undoubtedly be compared with it, it impresses me. It’s always going to get held up side by side with the master, but some people just may like his better. It’s an interesting risk.
My favorite is his drawing of the Red Queen, and I also love the playing cards. What do you think?
