I LOVE YOU, ANTONIO

by Tori on April 23, 2012

A few absolutely gorgeous illustrations from one of my favorite artists, Antonio Lopez.

This set is from a 1968 issue of Vogue UK. I love his style so much. If I could create work like this, I’d never stop drawing. There’s something that makes his art stand out to me more than typical 1960s illustrations (but don’t get me wrong—I love typical 1960s illustrations).  I can’t quite pin down what it is, but I think it’s his sense of atmosphere or story. Where are these biker chicks going? Why are they sharing a motorcycle? Why is there a child with them? His other work makes me ask similar questions.

He’s no longer alive, but besides his incredible artistic talent, Mr. Lopez is also credited with discovering Jessica Lange, Jerry Hall, Tina Chow, and Grace Jones. His work also inspired the likes of Bill Cunningham and Marc Jacobs. And me.

I love you, Antonio! (Which is just fun to say.)
