MAD MEN AT PALEYFEST

by Tori on March 15, 2012

With the new season of Mad Men coming up on March 25th, Los Angeles is erupting in a bit of a Mad Men frenzy. You can’t go anywhere without seeing the billboards, and it seems like every other night there’s some sort of Mad Men event. I mean, just look at how many times I’ve already said Mad Men in this opening paragraph.

I’m excited to say that I got to attend the MM portion of Paleyfest on Tuesday night. To me, it’s the best TV drama since Twin Peaks, and I’m so in love with everything about it. Mad Men has the perfect cast, incredible detail, wonderful characters, the most beautiful vintage clothes, and writing that I find absolutely thrilling.

Soooooo yes, I was very happy to get to go! It was basically a live panel with the cast and the show’s creator, Matthew Weiner, with autographs afterward (which I didn’t bother with). While the questions asked by the host and audience weren’t all that interesting, I just loved being in the same room with these guys.

It was so cute seeing John Slattery and Vincent Kartheiser whispering to each other on stage, and it was a nice surprise to discover that Rich Sommer is really funny. Kiernan Shipka was a complete doll with great answers, and it was fun to see January Jones with pink-striped hair. (It reminded me of when my friends and I used to color our hair with Kool-Aid. It looked awesome.)  The event began with a screening of the last episode from season four, and that was a good time, too—watching an episode of Mad Men with a massive roomful of people. Everyone ate it up, laughing at everything and going “Awwwww” when something sweet happened. It was like sitting in the live studio audience for Full House.

It also made my heart happy to see Vincent Kartheiser in person. Not only is Pete Campbell my favorite character on Mad Men, but I’ve loved his acting for years, ever since I saw him in Another Day in Paradise. He is so adorable, and he was the last cast member to stay onstage signing autographs. And he was singing along to the 60s music that was playing over the speakers. Big bonus.

All in all, such a fun night. Jordan literally had to drag me away.
