It’s that time of year again, when everyone loses their mind over costumes and ends up spending like $200 on a wig. And what is Halloween without masks? In honor of the holiday, here are my Top Ten Favorite Movie Masks. You can click their names to see film clips, too.

The Scream Mask
My favorite! I love it. Whoever designed this iconic mask did an outstanding job. Everyone instantly recognizes this one. The long eyes and face almost look sad and apologetic, which somehow makes the killer creepier.

Silence of the Lambs Restriction Mask
Not only does this mask look great, but when you know why he’s wearing it, it’s even scarier. Because he’ll EAT YOU!!! The small mouth area and neutral color make it almost a reserved-looking mask, which is perfect for such a distinguished killer.

Donnie Darko “Frank” Mask
The moment Frank shows up in Donnie Darko, it’s such a “holy crap!” moment. The movie is weird to begin with, and then a psychotic-looking bunny guide is added. The mask is perfect for that guide.

Nacho Libre Wrestler Mask
It may not be scary, but it sure is pretty. Notice the fine stitching around Jack Black’s plump, manly lips.

Eyes Wide Shut Masquerade Mask
Do you immediately hear those stabbing piano notes when you look at this picture? I do. This mask plays a huge part in Eyes Wide Shut (including a scene that’s like 472630582 minutes long where Tom Cruise purchases it). I do love how a simple mask is used to invoke serious concern in this film.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle Robbery Masks
When I saw this film, I was amazed at how scary these “plain face men” masks were. I couldn’t find a photo of the scene, but when you first see these masks, there are three robbers wearing them and the effect is so startling.

A Clockwork Orange Droogs Mask
This mask looks like a carnival-esque, Mardi Gras type costume piece. I almost feel like when Alex wore this, he was doing it to conjure up a partylike atmosphere as opposed to hiding his identity. It wasn’t so much to frighten victims or protect him as it was to add to his fun.

The Shining Bear Mask
HOLY MOSES. It’s been fifteen years since I first saw The Shining, and I can still barely cope with this bear mask. Even though you only see it for a few seconds, it scared the poo out of me. And before you sit there and laugh at me—it’s way more effective with the crazy music.

Vanilla Sky Mask
“This is my…this is my face,” David Aames explains to Brian Shelby in Vanilla Sky. With the new face came a new, obnoxious personality that pretty much chased his life away. Such a simple mask did such devastating things.

The Strangers Masks
They’re just plain freaky. The “Dollface”, “Man in the Mask”, and “Pin-Up Girl” masks work together perfectly to create such a menacing effect. And yeah, that’s Gemma Ward with the blonde hair.
Happy Mask Day, everyone.
