Kristen Wiig’s Saturday Night Live farewell last night was so unbelievably sweet.
To my knowledge, they’ve never sent anyone off like that before in the show’s nearly 40-year history, and it was a very moving, very emotional, and very fitting goodbye. Didn’t hurt that they used my favorite Rolling Stones song, either (“Rainbow”, not “Ruby”).
It wasn’t just the fact that Kristen was crying, the song was perfect, and the dancing was cute. It was also the faces of her fellow cast members at the beginning of the sketch that got to me. Jason Sudeikis, Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, and Seth Meyers all looked like they were dealing with the weight of the world as Kristen was called up to say goodbye, and then Bobby Moynihan looked like he was going to explode into a fountain of shaky sobs. The guys looked like they were having a rough time letting go. It was just so sweet.
Kristen brought a freshness to SNL seven years ago that has kept the show held high. She’s amazingly talented, dedicated, and funny, and although I will most definitely miss her on Saturday Night Live, I look forward to what she’ll be doing moving forward.
