Billy Jack—an old favorite. This movie has everything: it has karate, cowboys, Indians, and hippies. There’s rock music, love stories, classic cars, and ice cream parlors. It’s got a talent show, an improv show, and a street show. It has a courtroom battle. It has a rattlesnake blood ritual and an old-timey shootout. There are bullies, corrupt cops, a pregnant teenage runaway, a girl with fake eyelashes, and a schoolmarm with sideburns.
Seriously, it has all those things.
Billy Jack was one of my dad’s favorites, and we loved watching it together as a family. Some fight scenes are in slow motion—awesome—and I adored the hippie message as a kid. The music is great, and I love the look of all the itchy-faced flower children in the film. It’s all gold.
Despite some truly horrendous sound dubbing and the leading lady’s weird sideburns, this movie will always be close to my heart.
